Honouring Dr Michael Eaton

Our theologian friend Dr Michael Eaton visited us in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 12 July 2015. We spent time during the morning service honouring him for the wonderful way he is serving God, and reminding ourselves of the impact his ministry has made on us and others. Below are two testimonies of leaders impacted by Michael's ministry:

I first had opportunity to sit under the teaching of Dr Michael Eaton in 2007, when he presented the series “The Whole Counsel of God” at Grace Generation Church in Pietermaritzburg.

Although I’d been a Christian for 21 years, I had never been exposed to any form of systematic theology, or worked through the great doctrines of the bible in any form.  This series, which has now been published in book form, “blew me away”.  I realised just how little I really knew about the doctrines, and in fact, the great plan and purposes of God.

I’ve had occasion to sit under his preaching and teaching a number of times since then.  I remember him saying on occasion that he is a not so much a teacher, but a “preacher who teaches”.  Preaching always seemed to be very important to him.  His mentor, Dr Lloyd-Jones said:

“I would say that the man who is called to preach is the man who cannot do anything else, in the sense that he is not satisfied with anything else.”

I have always felt that Dr Eaton is one of these men.   I have a number of his books in my library, all of which have been very helpful in my studies, but it has been the preached word that has been the most powerful.  It has made me realise that preachers, according to Bryan Chappell “are not simply ministers of information; but .. ministers of Christ’s transformation.”

He has certainly inspired me to ‘up my game’ when preaching in my own church; both in content but most importantly, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

I would like to encourage everyone meeting today to take every opportunity to sit under the Word when expounded by Dr Eaton.  It will shape your thinking in the days ahead.    I also pray that God will continue to use Michael in this way, and that He will grant Michael the grace and the power for that task.

You asked me to tell you how Michael Eaton had an impact upon my ministry and those around me. I will give you a short answer and then a more detailed answer.

The short answer is this… Paul said in Acts 22:3  ...educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God as all of you are this day.

I was "educated at the feet" of Michael Eaton according to the amazing grace of God and being influenced to be zealous for God. I have been listening to Michael Eaton every day since 1988…I made use of every possible opportunity to listen to Michael preach…and listen to Cassettes, then CD’s and now on my cell phone :). Sometimes I listen to the same messages for days.

This is the detailed answer… I met Michael through Malcolm Beal 1987 and from about 1989 till about 2002 I put a yearly itinerary together and encouraged churches in SA to invite Michael Eaton to preach at their churches. New Covenant and some Vineyard churches were very blessed with his ministry and some Baptist churches as well.

I have no degrees, but through Michael I learned what I need to know about the doctrines of Creation, Man, Sin, Redemption, Sanctification and all other evangelical recognised doctrines. I understand these doctrines enough to teach others to apply it in a practical way in their day to day lives. I understand the 3 main different covenants we find in the scriptures very clearly.

Through Michael, I came to understand the glory of God, the love of God, the grace of God and the phrase that says, I must take hold of that purpose for which I got saved. The predestined good works God planned for me to do before the foundation of the world. I must live for the WELL DONE of Jesus as Michael is doing, up to this day, so well himself.

Through Michael I read the works of Augustine, Martin Lloyd Jones, Wesley, Calvin, Luther and many others. I came to understand the impact upon the Church because of the mistakes of Finney, Jerome and a few others.

I am involved, full time, in New Creation Ministries and what I do, is I preach over a period of 36 to 40 hours over 3 or 4 days and help people to understand in a practical way the doctrines of Creation, Man, Sin, Redemption, and Sanctification. What I have learnt from Michael I teach to these groups and help them then, to apply it in everyday life. They learn who God is, what Jesus did for them and how to live from who they are now in Christ.

Thank you Michael for your faithfulness in doing the good works that God has called you to do, and in doing that, given myself and thousands of others a good, solid foundation in Christian Doctrines, an assurance of our salvation and a constant challenge to work out our salvation so that we can receive our inheritance.

I am praying and have asked others to pray for your healing, but ultimately I pray that the name of Jesus will be glorified in the way you handle this sickness. I pray that until the day you go to heaven that we will continue to learn from you how to follow Jesus.

MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.
